Janice tossed her pen on the desk and removed her gold-framed glasses. Flopping her head against the back of the leather chair in her office, she let out a heavy sigh.

She should go home. This had been a long and trying week, and she wasn’t going to get any more work done now than she did spending most of the day thinking about the fact that Nathan was now an engaged man.

At least she’d finally taken a ride on the Harley. Last Saturday morning she’d had her mechanic get her bike ready. He’d done the usual maintenance, like bleed the brake fluid, and after checking the steering-head for looseness, tightened it fully.

She went on an hour-long ride on Highway 20, coasting in between cars and letting the sound of the wind and the powerful motor drown out the numbing pain. By the time she returned home, her mind was clear and the knot in her stomach, while it hadn’t disappeared completely, had lessened.

Janice stood and stretched her hands above her head. A trip to the bathroom, and then she’d gather up her belongings and head out.

On the way back from the bathroom, her footsteps slowed when she heard a noise down the hall in the direction of Nathan’s office. She’d assumed she was the only one left on the floor. Curious, she peeked down the hall and saw him walking away, eyes trained on a sheaf of papers in his hands.

Right away, her insides crumbled in silent agony. Off the market, and she hadn’t made a single move to stop it. If anything, she’d pushed him further away.

With sudden resolve, Janice was determined to be a grown-up and help Nathan celebrate his pending nuptials. She went back to her office and picked up a bottle of rum and a can of Coke from her mini-bar. Rum and Coke was his favorite drink, so what better way to celebrate?

Nathan’s door was ajar when she walked up. She peered in and saw him seated on the black sofa with his head thrown back, eyes closed, and arms stretched across the back.

She knocked on the doorframe, and his head lifted, a frown settling between his brows when he saw her. She waited uncertainly for the invitation to enter. He looked…worn. As if he’d had a rough day.

“Should I come back?”

“No. Come in.”

She entered and quietly closed the door behind her. She cleared her throat. “First of all, I want to apologize for my behavior the other day when I found out about your upcoming engagement. Of course, you don’t owe me anything—not an explanation or…” He wore a blank expression on his face. “Is there something wrong?”

“The weekend didn’t go as planned.”

“What do you mean?”

He ran a hand down the back of his head. “Sherilyn, the woman I proposed to, turned me down.”

“What!” Janice hadn’t expected that declaration and quickly crushed the surge of happiness and fixed an empathetic expression on her face. She’d done her best to avoid him all week, certain he was now an engaged man.
